Mark Moline
Mark Moline joins us in the COOLroom all the way from sunny San Luis Obispo, where he is an Assistant Professor. His education began with a Bachelor's degree in Biology from St. Olaf's college in Minnesota in '87, followed by a Ph.D. in Biology from UC Santa Barbara in '96, then a post doc position at good 'ole RU. Mark landed in California after a lifetime of globetrotting as the son of a minister. Pastor Moline raised his children to be students of the world, taking them to a gazillion residences - from Seattle to San Francisco, the Middle East, Brazil, Antarctica and a few more places in between. No wonder Mark looked so confused when I asked him where he was from. His Visits to New Jersey Dr. Moline's residence in July is in Tuckerton, NJ. Those familiar with Tuckerton know that it's a party place in South Jersey pulsating with excitement and bursting with scientists eager for a rip-roaring good time collecting and analyzing data. Who would want to be anywhere else? During his stay in New Jersey, Mark will be working on phytoplankton response to environmental forces such as light, mixing, temperature, photosynthetic rates and community composition. During this month of wild ocean discovery, Mark has the pleasure of sharing a bed with a snoring Dr. Schofield. Of all the places in the world that he's had to sleep in his lifetime, this one must be the biggest test. But a long day of research means one must make use of a precious few moments of sleep and Mark came prepared for this challenge - he brought earplugs. Spare Time? In his spare time, Mark likes to travel (he didn't get enough of that as a kid), SCUBA dive, play basketball, and to be entertained by his son Jason (who is almost two). In the true spirit of the swinging optics house, Mark also enjoys a good party - just keep him away from the grill. KA
