Josh Kohut

Dedicated CODAR Warrior

His COOL Job

Josh is actually a graduate student in oceanography here at Rutgers University. Besides taking classes he is working on his doctorate degree which may one day allow him to become a professor.

Right now he also works to maintain the COOLroom's CODAR system (our Ocean Surface Current Radar) - a series of antennas on 7 beaches along the coast of New Jersey. Josh is using the data collected from the system in his research to study coastal currents and how they can affect weather patterns and fish.

Josh has a physics background from his undergraduate years in college which provided him with the power of math to solve the problems he encounters every day.

In order to properly maintain and calibrate the antennas, Josh worked hard to qualify for his driver's license, because without it, he would not be able to go to the sites all over the state.

What's COOL?

"What I do is great because I'm constantly learning new things. Each day I'm doing something different."

"One day I'm out in the field working to solve problems with our systems, and on others I get to interact with people from other lands. There are scientists all over the world who are doing the same thing as I am, and we all work together to help each other out. On a daily basis I work with people from as far away as California and Canada."

What's Not so COOL?

"Many times there is too much to do and not enough time to do it."

"I spend a lot of time in the car driving from site to site which can be very tiring."

Josh's Thoughts...

"If you want to go into Oceanography, do it! But you gotta wanna do it. You certainly don't go into it for the money"
