For almost 3 years, Rutgers University's Coastal Ocean Observation
Lab has been measuring coastal ocean surface currents between the
towns of Brant Beach and Brigantine, New Jersey. Now, thanks to
the installation of a new Long-range CODAR
system, the COOL Lab can bring to scientists and the public maps
of coastal currents along the entire coast of New Jersey.
In January of this year, with the help of the US Coast Guard Loran
Support Unit, Scientists set up a second Long-range CODAR site in
Wildwood, NJ. The information collected at this site, when coupled
with information collected at our Loveladies site, produces a map
of surface currents over an area of the ocean sometimes larger than
the size of New Jersey!
The two long-range sites are part of our new network of long-range
coastal radars that will encompass the entire coast of New Jersey.
Three additional sites are scheduled to be deployed along the coast
over the course of the next year. These sites will expand our current
coverage further North to Long Island and farther out to sea along
the continental shelf. In addition, the sites will also help in
filling in gaps we currently see in our data.
The data currently displayed on the COOLroom site is not processed
or filtered. The arrows depict the overall raw currents in the ocean.
This includes the effects of tides and wind on the currents.
